Losing weight can indeed be challenging, especially as we age and experience a slower metabolism. However, there are steps we can take to maintain a faster metabolism. Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT, advises avoiding certain inflammatory foods and beverages that may hinder weight loss efforts. Here are some of the worst types of foods and beverages to consider cutting out to reduce inflammation and boost metabolism:
FRIED FOODS: Fried foods like chicken wings and mozzarella sticks may be tasty, but they are not the healthiest option, particularly for individuals over 50 who want to maintain their health and metabolism. Fried foods are typically cooked in oils high in unhealthy fats, particularly saturated fats. These fats can increase LDL (bad cholesterol), contribute to weight gain due to their high calorie content, and lead to inflammation and decreased metabolism.
ULTRA-PROCESSED SNACKS: Processed snacks such as potato chips and cheese puffs are not ideal for weight loss. These foods contain preservatives, chemicals, and high levels of sodium, which can cause inflammation throughout the body and potentially lead to health conditions like cancer. They are also high in unhealthy fats, which can contribute to weight gain and a decline in metabolism.
SUGARY BEVERAGES: While not classified as food, sugary beverages can negatively impact metabolism and should be avoided. Sugar-sweetened beverages have low nutritional value and are typically high in processed sugar and calories. Consuming these beverages can lead to weight gain, affect gut health, and contribute to widespread inflammation and inflammatory diseases or conditions. Opting for anti-inflammatory beverages like green tea or simply sticking to water is a better choice.
By eliminating or reducing the intake of fried foods, ultra-processed snacks, and sugary beverages, individuals can help reduce inflammation and support a healthier metabolism. It’s also important to focus on adding nutritious foods to the diet and maintaining an overall balanced and healthy lifestyle.
