The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has highlighted Burkina Faso as the most neglected displacement crisis in the world, despite the attention given to the displacement crisis in Ukraine. While the war with Russia has resulted in 6.5 million internally displaced people in Ukraine and 7.8 million refugees, the NRC draws attention to the humanitarian crisis in Burkina Faso.
According to Jessica Wanless, a global media adviser for the NRC, the international response to Ukraine’s crisis has overshadowed the needs of other countries. Last year, Ukraine received approximately 90% of the requested funds from the United Nations and its partners to address basic needs. In contrast, Burkina Faso received only 42% of the requested funds.
The NRC’s report emphasizes the need for a more equitable and comprehensive response to displacement crises worldwide. While acknowledging that resources cannot simply be shifted from one crisis to another, Wanless highlights the importance of political will and global empathy in addressing humanitarian needs. The NRC argues that the response to the crisis in Ukraine should serve as a standard to strive for in all displacement crises.
Burkina Faso is facing significant challenges, with approximately 2 million people displaced, which amounts to around 10% of the country’s population. Many individuals have been displaced multiple times, exacerbating the humanitarian situation. The NRC’s recognition of Burkina Faso’s crisis aims to raise awareness and galvanize support to address the urgent needs of the affected population.
