Europe needs a travel strategy to manage over-tourism

The tourism industry in Europe is facing the challenge of over-tourism, where too many visitors flock to popular destinations, causing overcrowding and negative impacts on local communities. As summer approaches and international travel resumes, concerns about over-tourism are growing. However, there is little consensus on what is driving this phenomenon and how to address it effectively.

Two recent reports shed light on the issue and offer potential solutions. Booking.com’s report highlights the growth of hotel chains in Europe, with just four international chains responsible for almost half of all new hotel construction projects. This concentration of hotels in historic tourist hotspots contributes to the over-intensification of tourism in these areas.

In contrast, Airbnb’s report demonstrates how the platform helps disperse tourists to diverse locations that are not served by traditional hospitality. Airbnb guests account for a small proportion of overall visitor numbers in major European cities, with listings on Airbnb being more dispersed than hotel accommodations. The platform brings tourism and economic benefits to communities that have not previously benefited from tourism, generating earnings for local families.

Airbnb is also investing in tech-driven tools to facilitate flexible search options, encouraging guests to explore areas outside the busiest districts in cities and helping to alleviate over-tourism in popular destinations. The platform is committed to partnering with communities and governments to address the challenges of over-tourism, and data plays a crucial role in understanding the problem and implementing appropriate solutions.

To support these efforts, Airbnb is collaborating with organizations like Eurostat to share data and working with governments to ensure hosts comply with regulations and contribute taxes. By promoting sustainable travel trends and leveraging technology, Airbnb aims to disperse tourists, benefit local communities, and contribute to a more balanced and sustainable tourism industry in Europe.
