Paris Fashion Week offered a stark contrast to the recent riots and social unrest in France as it showcased the world of luxury, craftsmanship, and opulence. While the country is still recovering from the deep divisions exposed by the violent protests following the police killing of a teenager, the fashion world took center stage during the second day of haute couture week.
Chanel’s runway show took place alongside the picturesque River Seine, with the iconic Eiffel Tower in the backdrop. Designer Virginie Viard presented a collection that exuded sophistication and simplicity, featuring a mix of tweeds, silk muslins, organzas, and encrusted lace adorned with floral and graphic motifs. The predominantly grey palette was enlivened by pops of bright colors like Barbie pink.
Meanwhile, at the historic Opera Garnier, renowned couturier Stephane Rolland showcased an extravagantly opulent collection. The show, filmed by veteran filmmaker Claude Lelouch for his upcoming movie “Finalement,” featured stunning creations such as a strapless velvet dress with a diamond hood, a gold flame-like headpiece, and a long red satin dress with a bejeweled collar. The show paid homage to opera legend Maria Callas, with her voice heard throughout the presentation, evoking her iconic performance at the Opera Garnier in 1958.
Stephane Rolland, known for his vibrant color choices, opted for a more subdued palette of black, white, and deep red, respecting the grandeur of the Palais Garnier. The event was also attended by actors who will feature in Lelouch’s film, adding to the glamorous ambiance.
Rolland emphasized the importance of merging fashion with other art forms and saw Lelouch’s request to film during the show as a “gift from heaven.” He expressed the need for refinement in the fashion industry, highlighting that money alone is not everything.
As fashion week continued to unfold, the extravagant showcases provided a temporary escape from the socio-political turmoil, showcasing the artistry and creativity that Paris is renowned for.
