Iga Swiatek, the top seed at Wimbledon, continued her dominant run at the tournament by defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-2, 6-0 in the second round. The 22-year-old Polish player, who is the reigning US Open and French Open champion, has never advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon. However, she has been in excellent form this year and has dropped just six games in her first two matches at the All England Club.
In her match against Sorribes Tormo, Swiatek broke her Spanish opponent’s serve three times in the opening set, securing a comfortable lead. She then continued her dominance in the second set, not dropping a game and sealing the victory in just over an hour.
On the men’s side, world number three Daniil Medvedev made a successful return to Wimbledon after Russian players were banned from the tournament in 2022 due to the conflict in Ukraine. Medvedev, the former US Open champion, defeated British wild card Arthur Fery in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-4, 6-3. He will now face either Adrian Mannarino of France or compatriot Alexander Shevchenko in the next round.
The ban on Russian and Belarusian players at Wimbledon in 2022 was a response to the invasion of Ukraine. However, this year, Russian players are allowed to compete again, and Medvedev’s victory marks his return to the prestigious grass-court tournament.
